Michael has been with the Centre for Educational Technology at the University of Cape Town since March 2009. He arrived in South Africa via Namibia originally from Canada after being awarded a Commonwealth of Learning International Internship in 2005.
Michael’s background is in information systems and much of his work for the Commonwealth in Namibia was around systems development and management information. During this time he developed a keen appreciation for open-source software and openness in the information world.
Michael enrolled for the masters in Information and Communication Technologies in Education with CET in 2009 and began working as a research assistant concurrently. Having arrived just as the Shuttleworth Foundation funded open educational resources (OER) project was getting started, he was around for much of the early research on establishing OER at UCT. Michael served many roles throughout the projects lifecycle: initially as a project analyst researching and documenting best practice in the OER community; then as a technical analyst as the directory was built using the open-source Drupal content management system. Currently, he administers the OpenContent directory; continues advocacy and training around OER and Creative Commons; engages actively with students around OER and open licensing; produces analytical reports about the directory and OERs at UCT; manages all social media channels marketing the initiative; and engages in research investigating the impact and understanding of openness at UCT.
In addition to his research into OER and open educational practices Michael have a keen research interest into learning analytics, alternative metrics for scholarly communication, metadata, open data, knowledge management, social network analysis and social media.
When not in front of his computer, Michael enjoys exploring nature on his bike or on the trails around Table Mountain. You can follow him on Twitter @mpaskevi
