Cheryl joined CET in 2003 as a researcher and we feel very fortunate that she traded Brisbane for Cape Town. In addition to playing the role of researcher on the Access and Use project, Cheryl teaches on the Masters Programme, supervises MEd (ICT) students, and co-ordinates the intern program. Throughout the Access and Use project, she has been most enthusiastic about gaining valuable insights and understanding how and why students use technology both for learning and personal use.
On top of all her excellent work, Cheryl finally graduated with her PhD in Information Systems in June 2011. She presented her first PhD research paper at the WLE Mobile Learning Symposium at the London School of Education in March 2009. This was a proud moment for CET as she won the “best paper” award. The paper titled, “It’s (I’m) not good enough: contrasting discourses of ICTs amongst South African university students” examines the different meanings technology holds for students and how this impacts on their use of ICTs. We’re not too surprised at this great achievement as Cheryl’s passion is evident in her work.
When not inspiring the interns or secretly dreaming of cocktails & tropical island sunsets, Cheryl is busy being a mother. Weekends are full of fun as she spends time with her two energetic young sons and husband.
